Dead Meat
Published in Paperback by Superiorbooks.Com Inc (May, 2001)
Author: Dale Alger
Average review score:

Wow
Hey-I really dug Dead Meat. I've been around the youth gangs, and I was surprised how well Dale Alger handled the problem. It is an important book.

A Great Read
I don't usually review books, but Dead Meat is a fine exception, a story for young adults and parents who want to be greatly entertained, while at the same time getting to the root of gang culture. It is a wonderful story and a wonderful lesson.

Dead Meat -- A must for teens and parents
I recommend this book to anyone in middle or high school and to parents of teens. The author has realistically described the choices faced by teens, particularly in our larger city schools. This story is well developed and has a well defined morality. I had to finish this well written book at one sitting. Thanks to the author, we can understand and help our children with some of these difficult choices.

Megamedia: How Giant Corporations Dominate Mass Media, Distort Competition, and Endanger Democracy
Published in Hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield (01 October, 1998)
Author: Dean Alger
Average review score:

How Giant Corporations Endanger Democracy!
The First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press, but Alger has written a compelling book about how the press has increasingly been muzzled by the moguls who control newspapers, television, books, and magazines. The author has based this study on both primary and secondary sources, and he paints a frightening picture of how these megamedia mergers (involving Disney, Murdoch, Gates, and Time-Warner) have limited the kind of information the public receives. This is an extremely readable book about the corporate media takeovers by 12 multinational companies that now control most newspapers, television stations, and book companies and about the resulting impact on the distribution of information. Across the country, we see small local papers taken over by the larger newspaper chains, and the major losers are the small towns whose local news gets diluted. Censorship can sometimes come in the form of corporate caution. Alger (The Media and Politics, Prentice-Hall, 1989) offers steps that need to be taken to protect our freedoms. This work would be an excellent addition to larger public and academic libraries.'

Great Book, Importan Subject
The domination of the media by large "mega"corporations has a far reaching impact on our "free" society. This book lucidly explains how this has come about, how it affects the nation, and what we might do as citizens to deal with this problem. This book is invaluable at shedding light on a problem that has been ignored (I wonder why) by most other major media outlets. It takes on the big guys and should be required reading for anyone who cares about the free exchange of ideas in a democratic society!!!

saw it on GPA
This book was mentioned on a recent public TV special which investigated "free" speech. As a high school student with aspirations of entering the world of mass communications, I may now consider reading this book, in hopes of understanding manipulation of the public by the media.

Secrets of the C++ Masters
Published in Paperback by Morgan Kaufmann (March, 1995)
Author: Jeff Alger
Average review score:

brilliant and funny
this is a book for serious c++ programmers, but what sets it apart from the pack is its humour. one of the best advanced c++ books i've come across.

Wonderful! An advanced and yet general purpose C++ text.
This well written text details topics such as advanced pointer classes, factory functions, flexible collections, malleable types, and specialized memory management techniques.
This is a must have for all developers, whether they are designing their own class libraries or just dealing with someone else's. Wonderful stuff.
If your only advanced C++ books are this and "Effective C++" by Scott Meyers you will be doing well

Adrift In New York
Published in Library Binding by Reprint Services Corp (January, 1903)
Author: Horatio Alger
Average review score:

Unique and poignant qualites make this one stand out
Throughout the course of his extremely successful career, Horatio Alger rarely deviated from his traditional framework for his stories - until this one. Adrift In New York tells the story of a girl, struggling against the offer of a bigamous marriage and subsequently cast out by her guardian, and a boy, who discovers for the first time in his life that there is more to life than stealing and dishonesty. It is a wonderfully moral, yet at the same time superbly entertaining story, and one worth paying any amount to read.

Excellent Childrens Book!!!!
This book is very highly recommended for use with young children. The flow of the words is very natural and makes you feel like you are on the highlands of Scotland. Teachers can use this book to teach sequence, counting to ten and other areas. Very well written and illustrated!

Blossom to the Rescue (Powerpuff Girls)
Published in Hardcover by Scholastic (July, 2001)

Average review score:

another fine book by E. S. Mooney
This is a storybook written from the point of view of Blossom. Funny and charming, it part of the same series as "Bubbles' Best Adventure Ever" and "Buttercup Strikes Back". E. S. Mooney really captures the spirit of the characters of the show with this one.

Snow Storm
Published in Hardcover by PublishAmerica, Inc. (January, 2002)
Author: Mike Alger
Average review score:

5 Stars & Two Thumbs Up!
Greg O'Brien, well-known TV meteorologist and the main character of Mike Alger's novel, Snow Storm, has a problem. Someone is trying to kill him and he doesn't know why. Here's a clue: The title of the novel, Snow Storm is a double entendre for the hero's winter weather forecasts as well as the street name for that illegal white powder that some people delight in sniffing up their noses. Alger's Snow Storm is a fast-paced, action-packed read that will keep you turning the pages and wishing you could read faster. Not only is Snow Storm extremely well written and the plot well-crafted, but the main character, Greg O'Brien has a quick tongue and a sense of humor that provides the reader with just enough comic relief to balance the thrill-a-minute action as events unfold in the story. Oh, and you learn a bit about weather forcasting as a bonus too. Five stars and two thumbs up for Mike Alger's Snow Storm. It's a terrific read!

A Wild Ride
What a romp! Mike Alger has written a fun and fast paced novel with an extremely likeable central character. Greg O'Brien, local meteorologist extraordinaire, gets unwittingly pulled into the nasty web of a diabolical drug lord, and goes eyeball to eyeball with a quirky assassin as a result. Fortune shines on Mr. O'Brien however, as he is able to slip through the would-be killer's clutches time and again. While trying to stay alive, he's also trying to solve the riddle as to how he got into such a mess in the first place!

Snow Storm is well plotted, with interesting characters, and believable dialogue. Greg O'Brien, our reluctant hero, is a family man who loves his wife and adores his children. He doesn't swear, and he goes to church. How refreshing! We can't help but worry what's next for our humble meteorologist, but Greg does have some help, thank goodness.

This book is a wild ride from start to finish, and Mike Alger has done a terrific job. Let's hope he keeps writing, a Greg O'Brien series of books would be great!

I just loved it!
This book was so much fun to read. I appreciate the hero being such an average guy - even if he is a local celebrity - who finds himself in an extraordinary situation and somehow manages to come out alive, while doing the right thing. The ending is a great surprise!
